Dattva vs Traditional SEO Agencies: Which One Makes AI Cite Your Brand?
A B2B SaaS founder had four page-one Google rankings and three years of consistent SEO investment. When he typed his product category into ChatGPT, three competitors appeared. His company did not. This is why AI citation and search ranking are entirely different games — and which approach actually closes the gap.
A friend I know works in a mid-size B2B SaaS company sales department that sells procurement software to enterprise clients. Three years of consistent SEO work, a good content team, page-one rankings for four of their core keywords. By every standard metric their digital marketing was in good shape.
Then during a sales call, the procurement head at a large manufacturing company mentioned something offhand. His team no longer searched Google when evaluating new software. They typed the requirement into ChatGPT, looked at what came up, and started from there.
After the call the founder went back to his desk and typed: best B2B SaaS for enterprise procurement.
Three competitors showed up in the ChatGPT answer. His product did not.
He tried Perplexity. Same result. Google AI Overviews. Same.
Three years of SEO investment. Four page-one rankings on Google. And the company was completely invisible in the place where their next enterprise client was actually looking.
He called me that evening. The first thing he asked was simple: why do some brands show up in those answers and others don't?
"It took just three seconds to come up with that response — no scrolling through a results page, no clicking through five websites, no comparing meta descriptions — just asked one question and we were done with a shortlist of names."
Now the companies that are listed in the answer will get considered and the ones that are not there will be nowhere to be seen. The domain authority won't matter here, or who is ranking on top on Google. One question asked. If your brand is in the answer you get considered. If not, you simply don't exist for that buyer.
This isn't a hypothetical example. Thousands of buyers in your industry make these decisions every day, and most brands are unaware whether they're part of the responses or not.
I got more curious and did my own diagnosis for a Buy Now Pay Later fintech I came across recently to check how they were showing up on AI. They have been a very well-funded company, having raised $125 million last year and being established by graduates from IIT — a very serious firm by any standard measure. However, when I entered "best buy now pay later app in India" into ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, their name did not come up but that of their competitors did.
Their SEO and Google presence wasn't the problem — it was an AI visibility failure. And that is the gap that needs to be solved.
In this article I will explain how Dattva is different not just from traditional SEO agencies but also from the modern GEO and AI visibility agencies that have come up in the last 18 months. Three different approaches, three different outcomes. And if you are trying to figure out which one your company actually needs, the distinction matters a lot.
To start off with what does all this mean? Traditional SEO agencies help you rank on Google. Modern GEO and AI visibility platforms measure and track where your brand appears in AI answers. Dattva does what all modern GEO and AI visibility agencies do — and on top of that it actually implements the changes needed to make AI cite you, hands you a verified blueprint, and works with you at every step. That is the easiest way to put it.
A New Shift
As mentioned by TechCrunch in its February 2026 report, India is the second-largest market worldwide for OpenAI. Sam Altman himself revealed earlier this year that India now has more than 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users. India's Perplexity usage jumped 640% year over year in a single quarter — a trend that led to the Airtel partnership, which gave all 360 million Airtel subscribers free Perplexity Pro access. India is now Perplexity's largest traffic source in the world.
And honestly none of that surprises me. People know how to use ChatGPT all throughout India. Students use it for their projects, professionals use it for their reports, people use it to ask anything ranging from food recipes to legal advice to laptop suggestions. That habit doesn't switch off when someone sits down to pick a vendor.
In case you open Google right now and search for anything commercially, there is a high possibility that you will see the AI Overview section come up above the first blue link in the majority of your searches. Most buyers never scroll past the AI Overview. They see the names, they click, they move on. The brands shown there get considered. Everyone else gets skipped.
Traditional SEO Agencies: They Know Google
If you want to be at number one on Google, an experienced SEO agency can definitely tell what needs to be done. They have sufficient experience with keywording, backlinking, on-page optimization, and other factors such as domain authority — these are the criteria Google uses to decide page-one placement.
When you wonder why your brand isn't mentioned in ChatGPT's answers, there is no help from SEO. Because SEO was never meant to do that.
Google and ChatGPT evaluate your brand based on criteria that are almost entirely different from each other. Google checks if your page matches keywords and has reputable links pointing to it. ChatGPT evaluates whether your brand is an identifiable entity that is consistently described by different sources as belonging to the same category.
The frustrating part is that a brand can do years of SEO to rank their page high on Google — but now a single question in AI can make all that hard work irrelevant in the buying moment that matters.
Modern GEO and AI Visibility Agencies: They Know the Gap Exists
Seeing this gap between SEO and AI, modern GEO and AI visibility agencies started coming up by 2024 and it became a category really soon. A lot of the first products built around it were measurement tools: AI visibility scores, prompt tracking dashboards, citation monitoring across engines, competitor gap reports.
The tools created great dashboards displaying what prompts your brand is visible for, what prompts your competition dominates, what the citation score of your brand is in comparison to ChatGPT or Perplexity, how positive or negative sentiment is about your brand. When you have the proper team and strategy behind you, these tools can give you a definite direction.
The problem is what happens after the dashboard sends its weekly report.
Here is what I kept noticing when I talked to marketing teams who were using these platforms. They had great data, knew exactly where they were losing to competitors in AI answers, and had a detailed report explaining why — but still six months later nothing had changed.
Their Wikidata was incomplete because no one on the team had bothered to fix it — no one understood how it works and fixing it wasn't offered by the platform. Their llms.txt was apparently missing although their developer had placed it on the list. robots.txt was denying access to AI crawlers. Their content team was busy executing the quarterly campaign and couldn't adopt a new format altogether.
This has happened almost every time I've engaged with GEO platforms from outside. The intelligence provided is absolutely spot on. However, the reality is that truth lies somewhere between the intelligence and its implementation. Even if you get the intelligence, it is useless unless you have the means to put it into action. And most Indian companies — particularly startups and mid-market B2B firms — cannot afford to bridge that gap themselves.
Dattva: They Know How to Close It
That is why somebody needs to come forward and actually take responsibility — sit down with the company's developer, optimize their content, instead of providing them with an AI report but not implementing and executing every little detail.
And this is where Dattva comes into play.
We start off just like any other GEO agency. We perform our diagnosis of the AI model — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. After that, we figure out your unique buyer questions where your brand is not mentioned but a competitor brand is. This we term red money prompts. We then map your authority gaps, content gaps, and technical gaps. And finally, like other agencies, we provide you with your free diagnostic report — giving you an AI visibility score, breakdown of all four engines, and five prioritized fixes at no cost.
What distinguishes Dattva from the rest is what follows after you get your diagnostic report. That is when the job really begins.
In full-access mode, our team handles the work. We apply the llms.txt, implement the schema, write and publish citation-friendly content in response to your particular red money prompts, prepare the Wikidata page, make the G2 listing, and more. The re-scanning process is done automatically monthly. Your team decides on any step — but the actual work doesn't fall on their shoulders.
In collaboration mode, when there is already a developer or content creator in-house that you'd prefer working with, we provide precise copy-paste solutions for all fixes and complete briefs for all content pieces. We check them before going live to make sure they are AI-citation-ready.
Every client gets one dedicated AI visibility strategist. This may sound like marketing talk but I want to specify what this means: there is one person who will know your analysis in detail, who knows what content is being published and what is coming. Who knows what citations have been created and what are still being built. It's not somebody who gets assigned to your account once the original specialist leaves. There is only one person accountable for everything from beginning till end.
The engagement is milestone-based. Nothing unlocks until the previous deliverable becomes active and working. At the end of the first month, we give you the diagnosis report and all the technical aspects. If after reading it you think there is no value, you can simply quit. The results are either completely visible or not at all.
"Traditional SEO companies are search marketing companies. GEO platforms are AI visibility software. Dattva is an AI visibility team. These are genuinely different things."
How All Three Compare
Here is the direct comparison. Technical fixes, content, and implementation are grouped together since that is how the work actually flows in practice:
| Area | Traditional SEO Agency | Modern GEO Platform | Dattva |
|---|---|---|---|
| What they optimise for | Google keyword rankings and backlinks | AI citation monitoring and prompt tracking | AI discoverability end to end — technical, content and authority |
| Typical deliverables | SEO audits, keyword plans, link reports, blogs | AI visibility dashboards, citation reports, prompt data | Technical deployment, citation-native content, authority footprint, monthly re-scans |
| Implementation: schema, llms.txt, content, citations | Partial and slow. Client team usually executes | Recommendations handed back to client. Rarely executed by agency | Dattva deploys directly or provides exact code and briefs for client team to execute |
| Free diagnostic across all 4 AI engines | Not offered | Limited or behind a paywall | Yes. AI Visibility Score, platform breakdown and 5 prioritised fixes at no cost |
| Dedicated strategist per client | Shared account manager | Not typically offered | Yes. One dedicated AI visibility strategist per engagement |
| Speed to first result | 3 to 6 months for Google ranking movement | Dashboards live fast but implementation depends on client | 6 to 10 weeks to first measurable AI citations |
| How you verify it worked | Google Search Console ranking reports | Dashboard score and citation rate changes | You type the buyer query into ChatGPT yourself and see your brand cited. 30 seconds, no dashboard needed. |
Still Thinking About What You Need?
By now you probably know which situation you're in.
If your customers continue searching for vendors using Google, and you're getting genuine leads via organic traffic, then I'd advise continuing to invest in SEO. This channel isn't dead, and a quality agency should be able to deliver a long-term return on investment.
In case you have an experienced and qualified internal team — people who understand the value of a Wikidata page, can restructure content briefs and validate schema without months of training — then using a GEO platform will help you obtain valuable data. Dashboards in those tools work well, although only if you've got an internal team that can act on the insights.
But if you're reading this because each time you type in your industry in ChatGPT, a competitor shows up in the result, then you know what the problem is. No need for yet another report — what you need is someone to fix this for you.
| Your situation | What you need | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong Google rankings but not appearing in ChatGPT | Dattva GEO implementation | SEO is working. The gap is entirely on the AI side and adding more SEO budget will not close it. |
| No strong presence on either channel | SEO foundation first, then add Dattva | Technical site health and content structure overlap. Build both but in sequence. |
| Buyers actively asking AI for vendor recommendations in your category | Dattva immediately | Every week you are not cited is a week a competitor is. This gap compounds fast. |
| Have an internal team, need better AI visibility data | GEO monitoring platform plus Dattva for execution | Platforms give you the data. Dattva turns the data into actual implemented changes. |
| Already doing SEO and want to add AI visibility | Dattva alongside your SEO agency | We do not replace SEO. We add the AI visibility layer that SEO agencies are not built to handle. |
Progress means appearing in the ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity response. Not a score. Not a report. The actual answer, with your brand in it.
Anything else is preparation.
