ChatGPT launched ads in India. The more valuable placement is still organic.

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Ads in India on 27 August 2024. Within 48 hours, performance marketing agencies were emailing clients about advertising on ChatGPT. This post explains what those ads are, where they appear, and what they are not — especially for Shopify stores deciding where to invest.

Where the ads actually appear

ChatGPT generates its answer first. You read the response. Then a Sponsored card appears below it. The response itself is not influenced by who is advertising. OpenAI has been explicit: answer independence is non-negotiable.

Google separated organic and paid results for years. ChatGPT is replicating that structure — organic recommendations inside the response, paid placement below it. Confusing the two is how brands overspend on the less valuable slot.

The product recommendation layer is organic

When a buyer asks ChatGPT for product recommendations — “best running shoes under ₹4,000 in India,” or “what face wash should I use for oily skin?” — the answer can include images, prices, brand names, and links. That layer is powered by Shopify’s product catalog integration and AI crawlers reading the open web.

These placements are earned, not bought. They depend on structured schema, crawlable catalogues, llms.txt, and third-party brand signals AI systems can verify. Adobe Analytics found AI-referred visitors convert at 4.4 times the rate of organic search visitors — they arrive already sold on the recommendation. The Sponsored label below the answer does not get that conversion premium.

What Shopify stores should actually do

ChatGPT Ads are worth testing if you have the budget — reported CPMs sit around ₹5,000. But advertising and organic AI visibility are different jobs. Organic placement requires making the store technically readable: correct product schema, crawlable pages, an llms.txt file, and external citations that corroborate what your site claims.

AI traffic to retail sites grew 1,324% over a recent 18-month window in Adobe’s measurement. Brands that only buy Sponsored slots while remaining invisible inside the answer are paying for the weaker of the two placements.

That is the problem Commerce Agent is built to solve — autonomous overnight fixes that close AI readiness gaps on Shopify. For B2B vendor shortlists rather than product cards, the parallel discipline is Generative Engine Optimisation.

The practical question to answer this week

Search your own category on ChatGPT: “best [product type] in India under [your price point].” Check whether you appear, whether the description is accurate, and whether your differentiators show up. Run the same query on Perplexity — platforms use different sources and indexes, so one win does not equal the other.

If you are a Shopify brand in India, the question this week is not only “should I advertise on ChatGPT?” It is: if I search for my product category right now, do I appear inside the answer?

Most brands do not. That gap is fixable.
